Computer security, or cybersecurity, is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks that include malware, ransomware, phishing and denial-of-service and vulnerability attacks. These attacks have the potential to damage a victim –individual or organization, industry or government – through data theft, downtime, identity theft, reputational damage, and more. Modern cybersecurity is an ‘arms race,’ in which information technology security teams strive to keep ahead of cybercriminal tactics. Cybersecurity research and innovation generates advances that help address evolving cyber risks, to build a trustworthy and resilient digital environment.
